how to learn SAP materials management (SAP MM)

You can learn SAP MM using the sources I will mention here. But first you need to set some rules to ensure that you are learning the right things. Otherwise you will end up learning wrong things. it is also important to note how much learning is enough to land a good job as a SAP MM consultant.

The first thing to note is that SAP is vast. A good consultant can learn and master only one or two modules of SAP. So never try to master more than one module to start with. When you have 3-4 years of experience only then you can go for any other related module. Moreover, a consultant is supposed to have prior education and experience in the area belonging to the module. For example, SAP MM covers areas including purchasing, material requirement planning (MRP) and inventory management. The consultant must have some experience and knowledge in these areas.

Now coming to question as to how much knowledge and expertise in SAP MM is enough to land a good job as a SAP MM consultant? The consultant should be able to configure SAP MM as per the requirement specification document. But all configurations can not be done by the SAP MM consultant alone.

SAP MM implementation may require that SAP may need to be configured using:

  • Standard configuration (available in the standard SAP where the functionality is already configured). In this case, the consultant has nothing to do.
  • Customization using IMG (Implementation Guide). Here the SAP MM consultant has to configure SAP functionality using optional features of functions available in SAP IMG).
  • Customization where functionality available in IMG need to be changed without writing any source code.
  • Customization where source code need to be written.

In the 4 scenarios described above, the consultant has to work on scenarios 2 and 3. The first scenario does not need any configuration as the functionality is already configured. Only the master data need to be populated by the consultant. In the second scenario, the consultant may need to go inside IMG and do the required settings. After that the master data can be populated.

in the third scenario, the consultant can do some customization which can do things like

  • change of sequence of screens for a transaction
  • hiding of a screen or a screen element
  • screen personalization to suite needs of end users
  • making any screen element as required, optional or display only

All of these things mentioned above can be done without writing a single piece of source code.  In SAP IMG there are some tools available which can do these things.

In the fourth scenario, the consultant may need to develop a specification and give it to a technical consultant who will write code so that this functionality can be implemented. It is to be noted here is that there are 2 kinds of consultants in SAP world. Technical and functional consultants. Generally when we talk of SAP consultant, we are referring to the functional consultant type. The technical consultants are the people who may not know much about functional aspects of SAP (configuration, requirement specification etc.) but they write code based on the specification given to them. So when you saay you want to be a SAP MM consultant then you are a functional consultant type.

If you want to be a SAP MM functional consultant then you must know and be able to do configuration in at least one area of SP MM: either configuration for purchasing or configuration for inventory management.
